Vietnam Stock Market Hits New Heights

The VN-Index, a pivotal indicator of the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange, achieved a remarkable milestone on Monday. This surge was largely fueled by the strong performance of Vingroup, along with stocks from the oil, gas, and industrial real estate sectors.

Investor sentiment was slightly shaken over the weekend by the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, which raised concerns regarding potential repercussions on the stock market. Despite this, the VN-Index ultimately closed at 1,358.18, marking an increase of 8.83 points and reaching its highest level since May 2022.

The primary catalyst for this upsurge was Vingroup’s VIC, which hit its ceiling price of VND92,800 ($3.54) per share. In addition, shares of Vinhomes (VHM) experienced a notable jump of 5.41%, reaching VND74,000 ($2.82). These stocks, associated with billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong, played a crucial role in driving the VN-Index higher on Monday.

While the oil and gas sector began the trading session slowly, it eventually maintained positive momentum thanks to anticipated benefits from the ongoing rise in oil prices due to the geopolitical situation. Notable performers included GAS (PV Gas), PLX (Petrolimex), and BSR (Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical JSC), all of which were significant contributors to market positivity.

Several industrial park stocks also saw favorable trading conditions despite the overall market showing fluctuations. Stocks such as BCM, IDC, KBC, SZC, GVR, and SIP achieved gains, buoyed by optimistic forecasts surrounding tariff negotiations. However, the session was not devoid of losses; a notably high number of stocks—205—declined, indicating a mixed sentiment across the market.

Foreign Investment Trends and Future Insights

Foreign investors continued to offload shares, net selling over VND200 billion ($7.63 million) across four consecutive sessions, focusing on stocks such as VCI, SHB, and VNM. Conversely, stocks like VIC, VHM, and FPT attracted net buying activity. Beyond geopolitical tensions, forthcoming tariff negotiations are poised to be a focal point for investors.

According to Dao Hong Duong, a director at VPBank Securities, the market had already reflected the worst-case scenarios earlier in the year. He pointed out that the expected tax rates emerging from negotiations would be more favorable than anticipated. Investors should keep a close eye on Vietnam’s average tax rate in comparison to its regional counterparts as this could have significant implications for the market.

Market Outlook and Economic Indicators

This week, the spotlight will turn to the U.S. economy, where critical data regarding inflation and growth will be released. These metrics are particularly vital amidst concerns over new tariff measures from the Trump administration, which could induce unpredictable market fluctuations.

The economic landscape in the U.S. appears increasingly concerning as both inflation and growth indicators send negative signals. The June minutes from the Federal Reserve’s meeting highlighted fears of persistent inflation alongside slowing economic growth. Notably, GDP growth forecasts for Q1 2025 suggest a significant decline, potentially representing the lowest growth rate since the Covid pandemic, thereby creating substantial challenges for the Fed as it seeks to balance monetary policy.

Conclusion: Key Takeaways for Investors

The final week of June is crucial as quarterly business results gradually unfold. Analysts recommend that investors focus on stocks with strong growth prospects to capitalize on the current market conditions. Additionally, companies that choose to announce preliminary earnings before official reports may provide early investment opportunities. As the landscape evolves, it remains essential for investors to stay informed, not only about domestic market trends but also international economic indicators that could affect stock performance.
